TEXTILES AND CLOTHING

The provinces of Venice and Rovigo are characterized by the presence of numerous companies specialized in the manufacture of textiles and wearing apparels.

In particular, they produce knitted garments for men, women and children, suits, jackets, skirts and trousers, waistcoats, men’s / women’s stockings, evening gowns, ties, headscarves.

Fabric is mainly produced in the Venetian area where, also in the historic center of the lagoon town, there are some important companies dedicated to the manufacture of hand-painted velvets, soprarizzi (partly curled

velvet), lampas, damasks, hand-woven jacquard on reproduced looms dating back to the 18th century.

The industry is made up of a network of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and a few larger companies working for the most demanding international markets.

A special credit is to be given, for its history and production tradition, to the workmanship of the famous Burano’s laces (HISTORY OF BURANO’S LACE), which spread in the Republic of Venice around 1500.

In the province of Venice, the sector “textile products, clothing, leathers and accessories” represents the first commodity item of export. In 2016 the export volume reached 766 million euros, an increase of 4.6% compared to the previous year.

In the province of Rovigo, the sector generated export flows for 118 million euros, an increase of 4.2% in comparison to 2015.
