The ports of Venice and Chioggia

Important provincial infrastructures for goods traffic and handling of people are the port of Venice, industrial and logistics, and Chioggia, which is most closely linked to fishing economy.

The port of Venice offers regular cargo services that connect Venice with the main Mediterranean ports such as: Alexandria, Haifa, Beirut, Istanbul, Piraeus, Malta, Gioia Tauro and, via transshipment, with those around the world: South Africa, North and South America, East and China, Australia, Oceania. From the Venetian harbor there are also regular ferries and fast daily ships (both for passengers and cargo) that connect Venice with Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Dalmatia, Istria.

The port of Venice in 2016 moved over 25 million tons of goods, an increase of 0.6% compared to 2015.

Passenger movement reached 1,777,000 units in 2016, recording an increase of 1.2% over the previous year. It is a continually developing sector, linked to trans-Adriatic ferries and cruises in the Mediterranean.

The port of Chioggia has undergone an important development phase in the past years, thanks also to the structural and logistical renewal of ASPO, Venice Special Chamber of Commerce Venice Rovigo Delta Lagunare. Chioggia, besides being the seat of the main fishing port of Veneto, with a lively wholesale market, has achieved good levels of productivity and competitiveness also towards other ports in the Adriatic.  As regards trade, 2016 confirmed the positive trend of the last three years: 1,764,000 tonnes of total goods, which increased by 11% compared to 2015; the best result since 2012, confirming the steady recovery after years of profound international economic crisis. For some years now, the Chamber of Commerce, through the company Chioggia Terminal Crociere Srl – which holds 90% of the share capital – is making important investments for the start of passenger traffic in the terminal of Isola Saloni, where they have already been welcomed experimentally, some small-sized cruise ships, attesting the real potential for development of this sector.
